Reckless Drivers in Charlottesville-BEWARE!
Police in Albemarle County, Virginia recently initiated an aggressive, high-visibility operation designed to get drivers who travel at excessive speeds to slow down along the most travelled roadways in the county.
Authorities hope that the “crackdown” will result in a decreased number of personal injuries and accidents.
The crackdown involves Albemarle County police officers stepping up patrols along a 6-mile section of Route 29 North between Hydraulic Road and Airport Road in order to discourage and catch those engaging in reckless driving. Approximately 50,000 people travel through that stretch daily, with more than 20 percent of Albemarle County’s crashes taking place there.
Albemarle County Police Sgt. Tim Seitz says that the biggest factors police see around this area of Charlottesville, Virginia are too much speed and driver inattention.
Obviously, not a good combination.
Earlier in 2008, 16-year-old Sydney Aichs died in a crash along the same stretch of road, causing the Virginia Department of Transportation to lower the speed limit to 45 miles per hour. However, officers say that drivers continue to routinely ignore warnings to slow down.
