Australian Chris Petrie Busted for Driving Drunk on a Motorized Cooler | Arlington DUI Attorney
Add a 50cc two-stroke engine to a cooler and what do you get? A convenient way for a drunk guy to get busted while operating his motorized cooler. No need to do a double take. You read that correctly – a motorized cooler. Apparently Chris Petrie, 23, of Australia, had way too much time on his hands and created a cool ride by putting a motor on a ice chest or if you are Australian, an Esky. The day Petrie was said to be drunk driving on his suped up cooler, he had been having engine trouble and was at a friend’s house where he tossed back a few beers while trying to fix it. While on a test ride, it is reported that police caught Petrie travelling at approximately 20 km an hour, had a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.160, and told police that he did not have a license.
Noosa Heads Magistrate John Parker who heard the case admitted that the circumstances were a bit unusual and had to look up the statute to confirm if the motorized cooler qualified as a motorized vehicle to warrant a drunk driving conviction. After his review of the law, he was satisfied that the defendant was indeed drunk driving on a motorized vehicle and fined Petrie $500, nine month disqualification for driving under the influence and added a month for his lack of having a driver’s license.
