Driver of Fatal Virginia Bus Crash Charged with Involuntary Manslaughter | Prince William Traffic Attorney
On May 31, 2011, we reported on one of Virginia’s most deadliest tour bus crashes that happened in Caroline County north of Richmond killing four passengers and injuring dozens – Driver Fatigue Blamed for Fatal Bus Crash in Caroline County. The NTSB National Transportation Safety Board is blaming driver fatigue when the Sky Express Inc. tour bus operated by driver Kin Yiu Cheung ran off the road and flipped on I-95 near the Carmel Church exit.
Initial reports indicated that Kin Yiu Cheung was charged with reckless driving but has since also been charged with four felony counts of involuntary manslaughter. Cheung is currently being held without bond at Pamkunky Regional Jail as he is being deemed a serious flight risk as there are discrepancies with the addresses associated with Cheung and the number of passports Cheung has to possibly leave the country. The reckless driving charge is the least of his worries as a conviction of involuntary manslaughter could give him up to 10 years in prison for each passenger that died in the bus accident.
Kin Yiu Cheung has apparently been busy in the last few years with getting traffic tickets in Virginia. WTVR CBS 6 in Richmond reports that Cheung has racked up nine traffic violations in the last eight years to include four speeding tickets, two charges for failure to wear a seat belt, failure to obey a highway sign, failure to stop/yield while entering a highway and following too close. Should have Cheung been allowed to continue operating a bus putting the lives of his passengers at risk with such a driving history?
