GM Announces OnStar Updates to Offer Facebook Access | Manassas Traffic Attorney

With texting and driving bans enacted in many states nationwide, how is installing a Facebook application in a car not distracted driving?

General Motor Co.’s OnStar, a system designed to provide accident alerts and diagnostics, is scheduled to release a system upgrade to rival Ford’s Sync. Ford upped the ante last year when they released the music component of their alert system.

Bloomberg reports that GM’s upgrade will do it one better. Reports indicate that OnStar will offer entertainment services linked to smart phones, most notably Facebook and Voice-to-Text systems.

The Facebook technology would allow users to verbally update their status, and listen to their most recent news feed messages. The Voice-to-text system, which will be studied with a test audience before being offered to all OnStar customers, reads text messages aloud, and gives the option to reply using one of four preset messages.

While OnStar is clearly positioning this as a safer alternative to a driver using a smart phone, only tests will show whether or not that level of distraction is a reasonable solution.
