Nevada Gubernatorial Candidate Proposes “Pay to Speed” or “Free Limit” Plan | Leesburg Reckless Driving Attorney
What if you could just pay a flat fee to not worry about receiving a speeding ticket? Nevada gubernatorial candidate Eugene DiSimone’s Free Limit plan rings eerily similar to the concept.
The idea: sell drivers $25 day passes for the privilege of driving 90 mph on state roads. DiSimone estimates the plan would generate almost $1.3 billion per year.
Now, as an Independent candidate, DiSimone isn’t likely to win at the polls. But for a state experiencing a tax revenue drought like Nevada, the idea could stick around.
The details from DiSimone’s website are vague, but the editors over at Aol Auto highlighted these key points of the plan:
-A vehicle inspection to certify the vehicle could travel at high speeds would be required to issue a pass (Nevada does not currently require inspections)
-A transponder could be attached to the vehicle, alerting law enforcement to the driver’s status so they would not be pulled over
-Options for daily, weekly, monthly or annual passes with autopay
-Specially marked lanes for use
-Stiff penalties for exceeding the 90 mph limit
While DiSimone cites unofficial support from the Nevada Highway Patrol on his website, Trooper Chuck Allen, public information officer for the Nevada Northern Command, told AOL “Candidate DiSimone’s idea runs absolutely counter to Nevada’s overall plan for improving highway safety. Higher speeds lengthen stopping distances, and that could lead to more vehicle-animal [among other] collisions.”
It’s an interesting proposal, especially when you consider that previous speed limit increases haven’t increased the overall accident rate.
