NTSB encourages all states to ban cell phone use while driving | Arlington Reckless Driving Attorney
Although the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has no authority to impose a federal mandate to prohibit the use of cell phones while driving, they are pushing states without such laws to start seriously thinking about this safety issue.
The NTSB is supporting their position due to the nearly 3,000 lives lost in 2010 alone from distracted driving. Until firm laws are in place and actually enforced, this type of behavior leading to reckless driving will continue to take innocent lives on our roads.
This is becoming the new DUI. It’s becoming an epidemic. – Robert Sumwalt, National Transporation Safety Board member
It has been estimated that 13.5 million drivers are on their cell phones at the same time and are simply in denial about the danger they are placing themselves and others in by not paying full attention to their driving.
Although 35 states and the District of Columbia have banned texting while driving, not a single state has banned the use of cell phones by drivers completely.
Accidents happen in the blink of an eye. You never know what call, text or post could be your last if you’re doing it behind the wheel. – Deborah Hersman, NTSB Chairman
