January 26, 2010 – Since only 19 states and the District of Columbia have passed laws making texting while driving illegal, the U.S. Government took it upon themselves to address the growing epidemic of distracted driving and established a nationwide law banning drivers of commercial vehicles to include trucks and buses from texting while driving. Therefore, EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY, commercial drivers are no longer allowed to text and drive or will face civil and criminal penalties along with fines of up to $2,750.

We want the drivers of big rigs and buses and those who share the roads with them to be safe. This is an important safety step and we will be taking more to eliminate the threat of distracted driving. – Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood

A study conducted by Virginia Tech Transportation Institute on texting while driving found that drivers of large commercial vehicles such as trucks and buses were 23 times more likely to be involved in a car accident than other drivers on the road should they be texting and driving. When combining the reduced reaction time of the driver due to the distraction of texting along with the extended distance required to stop or slow down such a large and heavy vehicle, a texting truck driver or bus driver can find themselves quickly involved in a crash.
