Utah Woman Takes the Wrong Way on to Highway; Hits Police Cruiser | Manassas DWI Attorney
Haylee Arnell, a 19-year-old from Riverton, Utah, turned the wrong way onto the highway. Stupid? Yes, but nothing we haven’t heard before.
But then, she kept going.
Police say dispatchers received four 911 calls at 8:50 p.m. reporting a wrong way vehicle on the highway.
According to Lehi police Sgt. Jeff Swenson, Arnell originally got onto the highway at mile marker 282.
“She drove up the off-ramp the wrong way, and she actually hit a vehicle there on the off-ramp,” he said.
Arnell traveled about three miles on the southbound lanes, through traffic, until trooper Cameron Carter spotted her. Carter saw that Arnell’s vehicle was close to the HOV lane, so he positioned his car there, in order to get other drivers to move over.
While Carter’s vehicle, emergency equipment activated (read: lights flashing, etc) was stopped in the HOV lane, Arnell’s vehicle slammed into him head-on. Police reports state she was traveling 30-35 mph at the time of impact.
Utah Highway Patrol trooper Todd Johnson reported that Carter was treated at a local hospital for back pain, and that his hospitalization was just a precaution.
Arnell faces charges of underage consumption of alcohol, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to obey traffic control device, failure to use headlights, driving the wrong way, and driving under the influence with injury (in Utah, a DUI isn’t a felony unless it involves a death).
The Utah Highway Patrol posted the dashboard-mounted camera’s recording to Youtube:
