Virginia reports significant drop in impaired driving crashes | Fairfax DUI Attorney

While D.C. saw more impaired driving crashes and Maryland did not see much of a change in the last five years, Virginia saw a significant drop in impaired driving crashes from 11,736 alcohol- or drug-related car accidents in 2006 statewide to 8,221 in 2010.

Officials are attributing the drop in drunk drivers on the road with more anti-drunk driving education campaigns and the increase of sobriety checkpoints and aggressive enforcement looking specifically for impaired and drunk drivers on Virginia’s roads. Virginia State Police and other local jurisdictions like Fairfax County Police have publicized their aggressive drunk driving crackdown campaigns with the hopes that drivers will not think about driving drunk or impaired with the strong likelihood of getting caught. Putting the public on notice in Virginia has proved successful reducing the number of impaired and alcohol related accidents by nearly 30 percent in five years.

What also may have helped is the mandatory requirement of ignition interlock devices for drivers convicted of a blood alcohol content of 0.15 or higher that started in 2004 in Virginia. Nothing is more embarrassing than having to blow into a device in front of your friends just to start your car. D.C. does not have such a strong ignition interlock law and Maryland’s ignition interlock law does not go into effect until October.
